A PIN (or P ersonal I dentification N umber) is your secret code which is known only to you and which guarantees the privacy of your library record. The library system will make you enter your PIN if you want to view your library record. It is also needed for various other library functions, such as renewing items, placing a hold on an item, and connecting to licensed databases (such as full text journal indexes) from off campus. Your library PIN functions in much the same way as PINs for banking ATM cards and credit cards. When selecting your PIN, you may use letters, numbers, or a combination of letters and numbers. You should make your PIN something you can easily remember but something others will not know and cannot easily guess.
NOTE: The system will prevent the creation of trivial PINs; a PIN is trivial if it contains:
If you have ever viewed your own record, placed holds, renewed items, or requested materials from interlibrary loan through the catalog, in either the text-based or Web-based library catalog, you were required to enter a PIN. This means there would already be a PIN in your record.. If you have forgotten your PIN, you may call the Library Circulation Desk at one of the following numbers: Fayetteville: (910) 672-1231 -- Pembroke: (910) 521-6516 -- Wilmington: (910) 962-3272 and ask them to delete the PIN from your record so that you can enter a new one. The PIN is stored in encrypted form in your record, so Library employees cannot tell what it is. They can, however, delete the PIN and allow you to enter a new one .
The library system will automatically prompt you to enter a PIN and verify it the first time you try to view your own record or use any function that requires you to have a pin. Your PIN can be letters, numbers, or any combination of the letters and numbers. It can be up to 30 characters in length. Please make sure your PIN is something you can easily remember.
Below are some examples of PINs:
